A powerful and slow-moving coastal storm is expected to develop into a classic Nor’easter this weekend, bringing significant impacts to the Northeast, including New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston. New Jersey’s Acting Governor has already declared a state of emergency for all 21 counties in preparation for the storm.

The storm is forecast to intensify late this week and affect coastal areas from the Carolinas to Southern New England from Friday, October 10th through Tuesday, October 14th. Residents in the region should brace for heavy rainfall, strong and potentially damaging winds, and moderate to major coastal flooding.

New Jersey Declares State of Emergency

In anticipation of the storm’s severity, New Jersey’s Acting Governor Tahesha Way has declared a state of emergency for all 21 counties, effective at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11th. The declaration is in response to forecasts of moderate to major coastal flooding, inland flash flooding, sustained winds of up to 60 mph, and significant beach erosion.

New York City Weather Forecast

New York City will see increasing impacts from the storm as the weekend progresses.

  • Saturday: Cloudy with a 40% chance of rain during the day, decreasing to 20% at night. Highs will be around 19°C (66°F) with lows near 15°C (59°F). Winds will be from the east at around 11 mph.
  • Sunday: Rain showers are expected throughout the day and night, with a 50% chance during the day increasing to 70% overnight. It will be cooler with a high of 16°C (61°F) and a low of 14°C (57°F). Northeasterly winds will pick up, reaching speeds of 21 mph.
  • Monday: The rain will become lighter but more persistent, with a 70% chance during the day. Highs will remain around 16°C (61°F) with lows of 13°C (55°F). Strong northeasterly winds of around 20 mph will continue.

Philadelphia Weather Forecast

Philadelphia will also experience a soggy and windy weekend.

  • Saturday: Light rain is expected with a 50% chance during the day. The high will be near 19°C (66°F) and the low around 17°C (63°F). Northeasterly winds will be around 11 mph.
  • Sunday: The chance of light rain continues, with a 35% chance during the day and a 50% chance at night. Temperatures will be cooler, with a high of 17°C (63°F) and a low of 15°C (59°F). Winds will increase significantly from the northeast, reaching 21 mph.
  • Monday: Light rain is likely to persist, with a 40% chance. Highs will be around 17°C (63°F) and lows near 14°C (57°F). North winds will remain brisk at 18 mph.

Boston Weather and Storm Impact

Boston and Eastern Massachusetts are under a Coastal Flood Watch from Sunday morning through late Monday night.

  • Storm Timing: The storm is expected to begin impacting the area on Sunday afternoon and evening, with steady rain and increasing winds. The heaviest rain and strongest wind gusts are anticipated from Sunday night into Monday. Showers may linger into Tuesday.
  • Heavy Rain: Widespread rainfall of 2 to 5 inches is expected in Eastern Massachusetts, with higher amounts possible on Cape Cod and the Islands.
  • Strong Wind Gusts: Coastal areas could see wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph, with the strongest winds on Cape Cod and the Islands.
  • Coastal Flooding: A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for potential inundation of one to two feet above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

The National Weather Service warns that the combination of strong onshore winds, high surf, and high astronomical tides may lead to significant coastal flooding, flooded roadways, and potential impacts to homes and businesses near the waterfront. All residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed on the latest forecasts and heed the advice of local officials.
